On the way to number one: sightseeing tour as a reward

On Thursday, the BOSS Vienna Padel Open in the Steffl Arena (May 20th to 28th) was a busy one: All of the men’s and women’s round of 16 games were played, Arturo Coello (ESP) and Augustin Tapia (ARG) made it through to the quarterfinals a big step towards returning to the top of the WPT World Rankings.

In the penultimate game of the day, even more spectators gathered around the center court. The reason: Coello/Tapia entered the court. The two are currently considered to be the strongest men’s duo, were able to win all of their six tournaments together this year and extended their winning streak to 34 games.

Sightseeing-Tour in Wien

In the 6:4, 6:3 against Victor Ruiz/Lucas Bergamini (ESP/BRA), the two once again showed their class and closed the game after 1:14 hours, including spectacular rallies and breathtaking rallies. Together Coello/Tapia have not lost a match, the winning streak of 34 successes is the second longest in the history of the World Padel Tour (WPT). Schönbrunn Palace, St. Stephen’s Cathedral, the opera – we are very excited,” said Augustin Tapia, whose nickname is “Mozart des Padel” due to its lightness on the court.

Favorites sovereign

The remaining favourites, too, did not show any weakness in the round of 16. The Spanish titleholders Ariana Sanchez/Paula Josemaria, currently number 1 in the world, defeated Veronica Virseda/Beatriz Caldera (ESP/ESP) 6:0, 6:4 in their first appearance this year. Their fiercest rivals, Spain’s Alejandra Salazar and Gemma Triay, defeated their compatriots Noa Canovas/Araceli Martinez 6-3, 6-1.

Old champion Fernando Belasteguin (ARG) and his partner Miguel Yanguas (ESP) had to go through three sets against Valentino Libaak/Marc Quilez (ARG/ESP), after all the favorites made it into the quarterfinals 6:2, 6:7, 6:1 .

Kids Day am Freitag

Argentines Franco Stupaczuk/Martin Di Nenno, who won the last WPT tournament in Copenhagen last week, defeated Toni Bueno/Jorge Ruiz (ESP/ESP) 6:3, 6:3. Crowd favorite Francisco Navarro (ESP) and his partner Federico Chingotto (ARG) beat Javier G. Mora/Javier G. Barahona (ESP/ESP) 6-3, 6-2.

The quarter-finals in the Steffl Arena follow on Friday. From 11 a.m. there will be non-stop play on the center court in the arena. On “Kids Day” there is a special promotion for all children and young people: visitors up to the age of 15 plus one accompanying adult enjoy free entry to the BOSS Vienna Padel Open. There is also a varied supporting program for children and young people, where they can also try padel for themselves.
