Matthieu Pavon takes control in Italy

At the end of this first round of the DS Automobiles Italian Open, in Rome, on the 2023 Ryder Cup course, Matthieu Pavon returned a card of 63 (-8, 9 birdies, 1 bogey) and sits alone at the top of the classification. The 30-year-old returned to his performance: “ I played very hard during the reconnaissance, I was comfortable. I have a new driver in the bag since Monday which suits me well. I knew I was able to do a good game, after going so low, on such a difficult course, it’s the little surprise of the day. The Frenchman is ahead of Maximilian Kieffer, only 2nd at -6, thanks to a score of 65 (1 eagle, 5 birdies, 1 bogey).

Another French on the podium

Julien Guerrier also started well, finishing his first round in 66 shots (1 eagle, 4 birdies, 1 bogey). The winner of the Hauts de France Golf Open in 2017 had good feelings: “ The course is very difficult, you have to hit the drive well, something I did today. I think I missed two fairways or three. That’s kind of the key here. I’ve been playing well for a few weeks, after the score doesn’t necessarily follow, but today everything went well. » In 3rd place (-5), the Frenchman is accompanied by Ashun Wu.

And a third in the top 10

5th position is shared by Tapio Pulkkanen, Jorge Campillo, Marcel Siem and Todd Clements (-4). 9th, Roman Langasque also grabbed the top 10 thanks to 5 birdies and 2 bogeys. At -3 he is alongside Niklas Norgaard, Kalle Samooja, Santiago Tarrio, Yannick Paul, Adrian Otaegui, Jordan Smith, Adrian Meronk and John Catlin.

The Ryder Cup already in everyone’s mind?

Clément Sordet and Victor Perez occupy 18th place (-2). The latter describes the course of the next Ryder Cup: “ I find it gets harder and harder every year. They changed a few bunkers. If you’re not precise from the start and you start to take the rough, it’s super difficult to get close to the flag. » The Ryder Cup precisely, the Belgian Nicolas Colsaerts (119th after the first round, +4), prefers not to think about it yet: “ As a player, when you are a few months away from the Ryder, you have to try not to pay too much attention to it because there is still a lot of golf to play before arriving at the last qualifying weeks. »

Among the other Frenchmen present in Rome, Jeong weon Ko and Antoine Rozner rank 28th (-1), Julien Brun is 41st after saving par, Alexander Levy and David Ravetto are 63rd (+1), Robin Sciot-Siegrist, Adrien Saddier and Mike Lorenzo-Vera take 78th place (+2), Victor Dubuisson, Grégory Havret and Gary Stal find themselves 98th (+3) while Joël Stalter finished 119th (+4).
