Korea Badminton World Mixed Team Championship runner-up… Ankle again in China

The Korean badminton team missed out on winning the World Mixed Team Championship (Sudirman Cup) for the first time in six years.

The national team lost 0-3 to China in the Sudirman Cup final held in Suzhou, China on the 21st.

In this biennial tournament, Korea attempted to win its 5th championship since winning in 2017, but unfortunately suffered a defeat.

The national team, which was caught by China in the 2021 semifinals, could not avenge the defeat at the time.

However, it is encouraging that the 2023 tournament finished with better results than the quarterfinals in 2019 and third place in 2021.

The Sudirman Cup consists of 5 matches in the order of mixed doubles, men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles and women’s doubles, and the first player to win 3 matches wins.

In the first mixed doubles match, the world No. 5 Seo Seung-jae and Chae Yu-jeong lost to the world No. 1 Jeong Si-wei and Huang Ya-chung 1-2 (21-18 20-22 8-21).

After the game, Seo Seung-jae expressed regret, saying, “I should have played boldly (at the set point of the 2nd set), but I was pushed back by the pressure from the opponent.”

In the men’s doubles, Lee Yoon-gyu also knelt down to 0-2 (13-21 17-21) to the world’s 10th ranked switch.

And in the women’s singles, the third round, the world’s No. 2 Ahn Se-Young lost 0-2 (16-21 20-22) to No.

Ahn Se-young, who had recently won three consecutive victories over Chen Yu-fei, took the loss on this day to take his opponent’s record to 4-9.

Ahn Se-young was unable to carry on the momentum of successively defeating world No. 1 Akane Yamaguchi (Japan) and No. 3 Tai Zi-ying (Taiwan) in the preliminary and quarterfinals, respectively, in the final.

Even in the 0-3 loss of the 2021 tournament, it was a nightmare for Ahn Se-young, who lost the third match to Chen Yu-fei.

“I want to praise the players who have done well, and I will fill in the missing parts,” said Kim Hak-gyun, the national team coach.
