Just missed out on a medal at the Grand Prix in Linz

Annika Würfel failed in the fight for bronze against the Portuguese Siderot, but still climbs to 34th place in the world rankings

The Rostock judoka Annika Würfel was in impressive condition at the Upper Austria Grand Prix and fought for an excellent fifth place in the Tips Arena Linz. The day of competition in the weight class up to 52 kg began with an exhausting opening match against Paulina Martínez from Mexico, who was able to win the Cube with a deep Ippon-Seoi-Nage. In the nerve-racking second round against Amber Ryheul from Belgium, she dominated the standing action and countered in a concentrated and energetic manner in the ground fight. After ten minutes she finally achieved the decisive score.

In the quarter-finals, the reigning U22 European Championship bronze winner met Toro Soler from Spain, whom she was unable to defeat, as in 2022. So Annika Würfel had to go the way of the consolation round in order to maybe still achieve bronze. There she faced Swiss Fabienne Kocher, third at the 2021 World Championships. Cube fought for a Waza-ari rating with Morote-Seoi-Nage, defended it and happily made it into the small final.

In the fight for bronze, she unfortunately had to admit defeat to Maria Siderot surprisingly quickly. The Portuguese excelled on the floor and forced dice to submit with a subsequent Sankaku grab. Disappointed at first about just missing out on the medal, the squad athlete who trains at the federal base in Berlin was nevertheless satisfied. This competition was a big step in the right direction, said Wuerfel in the evening. The competition gave her new self-confidence. With the top placement, Cube also improved to 34th place in the world rankings.

450 athletes from 72 nations fought for the medals in Linz. The German Judo Federation sent 13 men and ten women to Austria’s third largest city. Their yield: five medals and three fifth places.
