In the men’s and women’s 81 kg class, 2021 Tokyo Olympic champion Takanori Nagase (Asahi Kasei) won the bronze medal for the second year in a row. He lost to Lee Jun-soo (Korea) in the quarter-finals, and beat Sagi Muki (Israel) by ippon in the third-place play-off, which he won from the repechage match.

The 29-year-old Nagase failed to reach the championship for the second time since 2015, and the Japanese team missed the top in six consecutive tournaments in this division. Tato Grigalashvili (Georgia) wins for the second time in a row.

Megumi Horikawa (Park 24) and Mirai Takaichi (Komatsu) lost in the 3rd round in the women’s 63kg class. Japan still has three gold medals in this tournament. (Joint)
