BVB landed a transfer coup with Niklas Süle in the summer of 2022. Now it has become known how the change became possible.
Dortmund – Niklas Süle switched from FC Bayern to Borussia Dortmund almost a year ago. But now the BVB star’s advisor has revealed details about the transfer of the central defender, which show how much the Westphalians tried to get the 27-year-old.
BVB boss meets consultant at Rasthof: Süle change picked up speed
Volker Struth, who sees himself much more as a provider of information than as a consultant, first explains how the change was possible in the first place: “There were two parties: Niklas Süle and Bayern Munich, they didn’t find each other. We (the consultants, editor’s note) mediated, we put information on the table and at the end of the day it’s not (on a contract extension, editor’s note) come,” says the 57-year-old in episode 91 of the Bild-Podcasts “phrase mowers”.
He passed this information to BVB boss Hans-Joachim Watzke. “I have a very good relationship with Watzke,” says Struth and reports: “There is a service area between Cologne and Dortmund, where we meet twice a year, drink a cup of coffee and chat.”
One of these meetings was about BVB wanting to improve their central defense. And so Struth said, “I don’t think Süle will extend Bayern’s contract. Sebastian Kehl called me shortly afterwards.”
Details of Süle’s BVB transfer revealed: “It has never happened before”
The current sports director of BVB, who was still an apprentice to Michael Zorc at the time, checked with the consultant about Süle and his expiring contract. “And then the talks started.”
Afterwards there was a meeting at Struth’s agency, who, in addition to Süle, looks after the German internationals Toni Kroos and Timo Werner, among others. “It was the first time that there was a conversation with Borussia Dortmund where everyone was really there: Zorc, Watzke, Kehl and ex-coach Marco Rose.”
Struth emphasizes: “All four, at least in my era, that has never happened before. In doing so, they have underlined the appreciation of getting this player. ”BVB tried “intensely” for Süle.
BVB impresses Süle: “You can break it off with Bayern”
This probably impressed Süle, who signed a contract with BVB until June 30, 2026 last summer. “Süle said very, very promptly: Watch out, you can break off with Bayern, I don’t want any more negotiations either, I’ve made a fundamental decision.”
“I don’t think many players left Bayern Munich for free,” says Struth, “and certainly not to Borussia Dortmund. It happened the other way around very often, in this case it was different – and I was the bad guy from Bayern’s point of view.”
