‘Golden Smash’ Wins Gold Medal at BWF Malaysia Masters

[미디어유스/김용중 기자] The recent behavior of the Korean badminton team is unusual. The Korean badminton team, which participated in the Malaysia Masters held in Malaysia, is showing an upward trend by adding two gold medals.

In the women’s doubles, the 6th ranked pair Baek Ha-na and Lee So-hee faced the 11th ranked home team, Malaysia’s Tan-Tina pair. The match between the two teams was hot from the start. It showed a hot attack without even going through a search battle. As shown, the first set was a close match leading to deuce. In this situation, Lee So-hee scored two points in a row to take her first set. The second set was a landslide victory for Malaysia. It broke our camp with a drop to an empty area and finished it off with a powerful smash. After finishing the second set with a score of 8:21, the Korean national team prepared for the third set.

Both teams showed a lot of physical exhaustion due to the long game. However, Korea played a seasoned game. A smash made the opponent fall back, and when the space in front was empty, a drop was scored. Although they were pushed back in the beginning of the 3rd set, they immediately succeeded in reversing, and even after the court change, the Malaysian players were taken away by Korea’s play of attacking back and forth. In the end, he took the final set in 21:17 and succeeded in winning the gold medal.

In the men’s doubles, South Korea’s Kang Min-hyeok and Seo Seung-jae, ranked 16th, faced Man Wei Chong-Kai Won Te, also from Malaysia, who was ranked 26th. The first set was dominated by Korea. They perfectly controlled the tempo of the game and brought points, and the opponent also made a lot of mistakes, bringing the first game with a margin of 21:15. 2nd set was disappointing. Up until the first 10 points, both teams were close. After that, the score widened to 19:13 and seemed to reach the championship point easily. However, the Malaysian players maintained their concentration and led the score to 22-22.

After that, he continued to shake the Korean players left and right, and eventually made 2 points in a row and made the set score 1:1. In the third set, there was a somewhat disappointing decision. Min-Hyuk Kang’s act of tying his shoelaces was recognized as an act of delaying time and received a red card, adding one point to the Malaysian team. Afterwards, it faltered slightly and the score gap widened by 3 points, but soon regained composure and brought the championship point to 20:19. He picked out Malaysia’s long receive and eventually won the championship.

In fact, the promotion of the Korean badminton team was foretold. At the German Open in March of this year, he brought 2 gold medals and 3 silver medals, and at the Jeonyeong Open, he also brought 2 gold medals and 2 silver medals, promoting Korea’s badminton heyday. Now they are looking to win medals at the Hangzhou Asian Games in September and the 2024 Paris Olympics. In particular, there is no gold medal in the Olympic Games since the 2008 Lee Yong-dae-Lee Hyo-jeong mixed doubles group, so many expectations are being poured into the current Korean badminton team, which is steadily drawing an upward curve. At this rate, it seems that good results can be obtained.
