Genk assistant king Mike Trésor is new Ebony Shoe, Boniface and Orban on stage | Jupiler Pro League

Assist King Mike Trésor of KRC Genk is the new Ebony Shoe. The Belgian with Burundian roots was honored as the best football player of African descent in the Belgian league during a gala in the Brussels Hotel Tangla.

Trésor succeeds the Dutch-Moroccan attacker Tarik Tissoudali (AA Gent) on the honors list of the trophy. He beats Union striker Victor Boniface, Gent striker Gift Orban and his teammates at Racing Genk, Joseph Paintsil and Bilal El Khannouss in the final score.

The 23-year-old Trésor was of gold value for Racing Genk throughout the season. The attacking midfielder increased his assists to 23 in the Jupiler Pro League this season in the top match against Union (1-1) on Sunday. No one ever did better. Trésor improved the 24-year-old record of Genk icon Branko Strupar.

Trésor is the fifth Genk player to raise the Ebony Shoe. His predecessors were the Guinean Souleymane Oulare (1999), the Burkinabé Moumouni Dagano (2002), the Tanzanian Ally Samatta (2019) and the Nigerian Paul Onuachu (2021).

Oulare, Dagano and Samatta all received the Ebony Shoe in a season in which they became champions with Genk.

“I am very proud and very happy,” said winner Mike Trésor. “This says a lot about the season we are running with Genk.”

The 23-year-old midfielder ends up in a nice row with resounding names such as Vincent Kompany, Romelu Lukaku and Mbark Boussoufa.

“That is an honor,” says Trésor, who indicates a third of the goals in Genk. “Thanks to training, but often by feeling.”

Should an Ebony Shoe also play football for the Red Devils?

“I don’t know,” he replies. “Hopefully I’ll keep playing like this and get the chance one day.”

First there is the title battle with Racing Genk. “We have to win both games. It is the only way to keep our chances somewhat cool. I certainly think it will be a battle until the last day.”

To then take a step higher? “There will be interest in me, but my main focus is now on the play-offs”, Trésor concludes.
