Finally some good news for Real Madrid

As injuries and bad results multiply in Madrid, Real can finally count on good news. And she is big.

Things are not quite official yet but we can now say it: Luka Modric extends his contract at Real Madrid for next season. The contract has been drafted and approved by everyone but it still lacks the signature at the bottom of the documents to set everything in stone. The Croatian’s extension should be effective between the Copa del Rey final against Osasuna and the Champions League semi-final first leg against Manchester City.

A quickly played negotiation

Willing to continue with Merengue despite his 37 years, Luka Modric was surprised not to have yet received a proposal for an extension in the spring. At the beginning of April, he was reassured by Florentino Perez who received him personally to assure him of future discussions. The negotiations were very quick since the Croatian directly put aside any financial question to continue his dream of wearing the colors of the White House. In deference to his modest salary demands, the club kept a high pay to keep him among the club’s highest-paid players in line with his role on the pitch.

Despite an astronomical offer from Saudi Arabia offering him nearly 40M per year, the Croatian only ever wanted one thing: to extend to Madrid. He thus directly dismissed the Saudi offer out of hand and did not use it to put pressure on Real. Injured in the calf for a few days, his presence during the next important meetings of the Merengue is a great unknown. He will be too short for the Cup final against Osasuna this weekend and will hope to be fit for the Champions League first leg against Manchester City.
