El Milagro Monfils: “I didn’t want to lose 6-0”

Gael Monfils (394th of the ATP) was left with an incredible victory against Sebastian Baez (42nd) in the first round of Roland Garros. The Frenchman was 0-4 in the deciding set; however, he reacted in time and won 3-6, 6-3, 7-5, 1-6 and 7-5.

In relation to his thoughts in the last set, the Frenchman revealed that all he wanted was to win at least one game so as not to lose 6-0. “I didn’t want to lose it 6-0. Only Murray and Robredo could do it. I wanted to win at least one game.”.

In this regard, he added: “I subconsciously thought that if I could push a little more, maybe I would. Afterwards I had mixed feelings, I was happy that I won a game and I was relieved that I was not going to lose it 6-0.”.

On the other hand, he talked about how the game ended physically. “It hurt a lot, but we are high-level athletes for a reason. During the practices you manage to overcome the pain,” she stressed.

Finally, he also maintained that when he saw Báez as a rival in the draw, he was not very happy. “It wasn’t the kind of game I wanted, not for the first round. However, once the match starts, you have to accept it and find solutions. I’m very happy, it was one of my best matches.”he concluded.
