Drama in Dortmund! Bavaria is crowned German champion

FC Bayern Munich is German champion again!

Borussia Dortmund collapsed under the high pressure of expectations on the final 34th matchday of the German Bundesliga and only drew 2-2 in the home game against Mainz 05.

BVB gambled away the historic title chance in the championship duel with Bayern, who did their homework at 1. FC Köln with a late 2-1 work win and lifted the German championship trophy for the eleventh time in a row (!).

shock! Mainz takes BVB by surprise

A few hours before kick-off there was goosebumps all around Signal Iduna Park. A sea of black and yellow fans is getting ready for the showdown, enjoying the summer temperatures before heading to the cauldron. 80,000 BVB supporters whip up their team from minute one.

Right from the start, Dortmund tried to find a balance between risk and safety. The initial phase is largely restrained.

Then the sudden shock for BVB: Mainz kicked a corner kick sharply into the short post, Andreas Hanche-Olsen escaped his guard and nodded off to take the lead (15′). A great murmur goes through the stadium.

Haller’s penalty drama

Then it comes in quick succession: just three minutes later, after a foul on Mal in the penalty area, VAR asks referee Marco Fritz to monitor. After looking at the pictures, the Fingerzig follows the point. Sebastien Haller (19th) starts and can bring hope back to the pitch – but fails!

Great uncertainty is spreading in the ranks of Dortmund in these minutes.

Mainz takes advantage of this fact and plays in the direction of the Dortmund goal with a broad chest and shoots the shaky BVB even further under pressure. ÖFB legionnaire Karim Onisiwo is allowed to head in from seven meters, Kobel is meanwhile still on it with his fingertips, but cannot prevent the 0: 2 (24th).

BVB tried hard as a result and visibly wanted to shake off the pressure, but had problems overcoming Mainz’s deep defence.

Shortly before the break, Dortmund reared up again: First, Hummels took heart, took a shot from around 20 meters and forced Mainz-Gaolie Finn Dahmen to make a brilliant save (45th). Then Donyell Malen only hits the side netting after a high ball to the second post (45+4).

A glimmer of hope through Guerreiro

Even after a change of sides, the Dortmund defense swims properly: Mainz offensive man Jae-sung Lee gets the play equipment played perfectly into the run by Onisiwo and pulls away when falling. Dortmund can thank goalkeeper Gregor Kobel that the title decision is not yet final (48th).

The Dortmund drama continues: Onisiwo lets the bar wobble (58′), in return Haller fails to score a Moukoko cross (59′).

The goal, which is so important, should still come: Rapahael Guerreiro brings BVB back in and can reduce the lead to 1:2 with the inside rod (69th). The stadium and hope suddenly lives again!

Dortmund still needs a miracle and throws everything into the balance in the final stages. In injury time, Süle made it 2-2 (90+6). In the end, the hit shouldn’t be enough to win the title.

Blitztor: Coman puts Bayern on course for the title

Meanwhile, FC Bayern also has its problems, but in the end remains the laughing winner again.

The Rhein Energie Stadium of 1. FC Köln was a tough place for many a team. The Bavarians also get the feeling at first that the billy goats will not give anything lightly that day.

The Tuchel-Elf regains calm and possession of the ball, pushes the ball through their own ranks at high speed and then stabs ice cold: Kingsley Coman receives the pass from Sane on the left, pulls inwards and flicks into the far corner – 1: 0 for Munich, who at this point are passing Dortmund for the first time and are aiming for the title.

The people of Munich are now finding their rhythm better and better. Thomas Müller is served by a cross from Pavard and heads the ball to the aluminum (19th).

In the meantime, Cologne can repeatedly set pinpricks, but ex-Austrian Eric Martel cannot use such a one in his solo run through the Bayern defense (23rd).

Musiala becomes the title hero

As a result, Bayern let the hosts play their game, becoming more passive, only to then strike again in injury time. Leroy Sane is sent on by Serge Gnabry with an ideal pass and skillfully increases to 2-0 – the goal only lasts a few seconds after the VAR uncovers a Sane handball.

In the second half, Bayern fail to put the lid on it. Cologne are getting closer and closer to equalizing and in the 61st minute they despair of keeper Yann Sommer, who directs a Selke header to the crossbar.

The decision in one of the most exciting title races of all time is still a long time coming, but is then supposedly made by the VAR. Gnabry is in the sixteenth with a Cologne cross with his hand – penalty! ÖFB legionnaire Dejan Ljubicic steps up and sinks the ball into the net (81st).

The title seems to be back in Dortmund’s hands after all, while Bayern aren’t giving up just yet. The tension remains high, the fight for the title reaches its next high point only a short time later: Jamal Musiala drops the ball at his feet after a blocked shot. The Bayern player takes measure and inserts the 2:1 on the bottom right (89th) – the gold goal to win the title!
