“Difference between RWDM and Union? That’s like difference between Roméo Elvis and his sister Angèle” | The stand

With Anderlecht, Union and now also RWDM, no less than 3 Brussels clubs will play in the Jupiler Pro League next season. Football commentator Jeroen Roppe sketches a portrait of the “newcomer” in our podcast De Tribune. “Football is really alive in Molenbeek,” he says.

It was a popular party on Saturday evening in Molenbeek, after the 1-0 win against RSCA Futures that gave RWDM the certainty of the title. “After a Brussels derby, that makes it extra special,” Jeroen Roppe notes.

A title party after a Brussels derby, haven’t we seen that before? “It’s actually like 2 years ago when Union was allowed to celebrate promotion, after a match against Union. Even though that was in full corona period, without supporters in the stadium.”

“This was completely different. It was a swirling football temple, the stadium was on fire. The Edmond Machtens Stadium was completely sold out, with 9,000 spectators. Football is really alive in Molenbeek.”

The RWDM supporters are very loyal, as we have seen in recent years. In the stadium, there is singing non-stop for 90 minutes.

Can RWDM also write a beautiful Brussels story at the highest level in the wake of Union? “The following is very loyal, we have seen that in recent years. In the stadium people sing non-stop for 90 minutes. The revival is somewhat comparable to that of Union. It may well go the same way, yes.”

Yet Roppe also sees a difference between the 2 clubs, illustrated by singer Roméo Elvis, a fanatical RWDM supporter, and his sister Angèle, who has already been spotted in the Dudenpark with a Union outfit.

“Their father is also a real RWDM supporter, he passed on that microbe to his son. Brother and sister also illustrate the difference between the 2 clubs nicely: Roméo Elvis with his more raw and virile music as a symbol for RWDM and Angéle like Union , a bit more hip and feminine.”

“Owner Textor sees the potential of a Brussels club”

RWDM has swam through quite a few turbulent waters over the years. Where is the future of the club now owned by American businessman John Textor?

“He is a real football fan”, says Jeroen Roppe. “I think he understands very well that Brussels is a very interesting place to have a football club. He sees the potential.”

Textor has several clubs in his portfolio, including Crystal Palace and Olympique Lyon. The American is also chairman of the latter club.

“I don’t know what his concrete intentions are with RWDM,” says Roppe. “I suspect that he will be happy to transfer players from one club to another. Whether that is the right formula remains to be seen.”

“RWDM’s expectations for next season are also related to his investments. Everything depends on him. Westerlo and Union were a lot further than RWDM at the moment when they were promoted. I don’t think we can put RWDM in Play-off I right away. should expect, although you never know what Textor will do.”
