Status: 8:44 p.m

SV Darmstadt 98 returns to the Bundesliga. With a 1-0 win against 1. FC Magdeburg on the penultimate match day, the Hessians are the first promoted team of the season. But they are not champions of the 2nd division yet.

Dhe SV Darmstadt 98 made the early promotion to the Bundesliga perfect in the third attempt. Coach Torsten Lieberknecht’s team celebrated on Friday evening in front of 17,650 spectators in the sold-out stadium at Böllenfalltor. On the penultimate second division match day, the Lilien defeated 1. FC Magdeburg 1-0 (1-0) and returned to the top flight after six years.

With 67 points, Darmstadt can no longer be pushed out of the top two places by the pursuers 1. FC Heidenheim and Hamburger SV before the season finale, but they are not yet champions. After the defeats against FC St. Pauli and at Hannover 96, the long, comfortable lead of the leaders had recently melted again.

After Phillip Tietz initially missed two great chances, the striker scored the goal of the day with his twelfth goal of the season (36th minute). However, the home team and fans had to be patient because only the video evidence showed that Tietz was not offside.

Shortly after the kick-off, according to the police in southern Hesse, there was an argument between emergency services and FCM supporters. Pyrotechnics were detonated. The police said they used pepper spray and batons for a short time.

Magdeburg, who have already secured their place in the league, missed several chances against the strong goalkeeper Marcel Schuhen. Lieberknecht had already been promoted with Eintracht Braunschweig in the 2010/11 season. Darmstadt caused a sensation in the era of head coach Dirk Schuster, when the traditional club between 2013 and 2015 rose from the third to the second and then to the first division. In 2017, the lilies – at that time under head coach Torsten Frings – were relegated again.
