SC Cambuur was relegated from the Eredivisie on Saturday after two years. A 0-3 defeat against FC Utrecht was fatal for the team of trainer Sjors Ultee.
The first two goals from Utrecht fell just before the break. First it was Sander van de Streek who hurt his old club with a header. Not much later, Anastasios Douvikas – also with the head – doubled the score.
In the second half, the Greek striker made it 0-3 from a penalty. With sixteen goals, he can now call himself top scorer of the Eredivisie together with Sydney van Hooijdonk from sc Heerenveen. PSV player Xavi Simons follows with fifteen hits.
Cambuur’s relegation is no surprise. The club from Leeuwarden has been struggling all season and, even after the interim arrival of Ultee – he was appointed in November to succeed the sick Henk de Jong – failed to break the negative spiral.
There was only (no chance) lost in the past few weeks. In 31 matches, Cambuur only beat Fortuna Sittard (1-4), PSV (3-0), FC Groningen (0-1) and Go Ahead Eagles (4-1). The remaining duels with Vitesse (away), Sparta Rotterdam (away) and RKC Waalwijk (home) are the emperor’s beard.
Cambuur has played in the Eredivisie since 2021
Cambuur returned to the Eredivisie as champion of the Kitchen Champion Division in 2021 after an absence of five years. Last season, the club remained out of trouble under De Jong with a ninth place.
Due to the defeat against FC Utrecht, the deficit in sixteenth place (twelve points) has become unbridgeable. If number seventeen FC Groningen loses points against Go Ahead on Sunday, then both relegants are known.
FC Utrecht is working towards participation in the play-offs for a ticket for the second preliminary round of the Conference League. The team of coach Michael Silberbauer still plays at home against RKC Waalwijk, away against Ajax and at home against FC Emmen.
