A teenager who played for a French football team has been remanded in Germany following a fight after a match, during which a 15-year-old Berliner was seriously injured, German police said on Monday.

During a youth tournament, in which teams from 16 different countries, mostly European, took part, a fight took place in Frankfurt, in central Germany, after a match between a French team and a German team.

“A 16-year-old player from a French football team allegedly hit a 15-year-old Berliner in the head and throat,” the German police said in their statement. The victim of the blows “collapsed on the ground and had to be sent to intensive care”, she adds.

The judge orders his detention on remand

“The emergency services immediately dropped the young man off at the nearest hospital, where he was found to have life-threatening brain injuries,” the statement said.

“The 16-year-old was arrested, and the following day brought before a judge who ordered his pre-trial detention,” police added. Contacted, the tournament organizers refused to give details on the case, saying they were “deeply upset by the events”.
