Belgian dilemma after English promotion: “Sheffield United and Beerschot are for sale” | The stand

Sheffield United had four games to collect three more points this season. The prize at stake was huge: a secure second place in The Championship and the ticket to the Premier League to go with it.

Last Wednesday, Sheffield United hit that jackpot by beating West Brom 2-0.

Vincent Kompany showed Burnley the way for a season. Another old acquaintance often gave the right direction at Sheffield United this season. Also against West Brom.

Sander Berge (ex-Racing Genk) scored the important opening goal against West Brom.

“Berge has had a top season at Sheffield United,” says Bert Sterckx in De Tribune. Sterckx has been following Sheffield United for years, ever since he ended up in the former industrial city as a student.

Besides Sander Berge, there is another Belgian link with the brand new PhD student in England.

That link leads to the Kiel in Antwerp.

In addition to Sheffield United, the portfolio of Saudi Prince Abdullah bin Mosaad also includes Beerschot. In Antwerp they have to hope that the prince will be inspired by what happened in Sheffield, because his love for his European clubs seems to have cooled considerably.

“He wants to sell Sheffield and Beerschot”, Bert Sterckx has heard.

“A prince is not a sheik and apparently his pockets are not deep enough to make Sheffield United a stable club in the Premier League.”

The prince does not see his football clubs as toys, but as an investment. Sheffield United and Beerschot do not meet his expectations and are therefore in the window. “For a sale, the promotion and the semi-final in the FA Cup of Sheffield United is a good thing,” says Bert Sterckx.

“At Beerschot, he would also like to get out the millions he invested again.”

The prince is therefore faced with a dilemma. Invest less or just more.

“He will not like to invest much more, but that is perhaps necessary to lead Beerschot to promotion and thus provide the necessary added value,” says Sterckx.

At Kiel, they must therefore hope that the taste of getting a PhD tasted sweet for Abdullah bin Mosaad. After a possible promotion, Beerschot will wave goodbye to his prince without much grumbling. Provided he sells to someone who shows more commitment.
