They launch an awareness campaign in football stadiums in Spain to fight against racism
The initiative comes after the insults received by the Madrid player Vinícius Júnior last Sunday at Mestalla
The Barça coach, Xavi Hernández, blunt: “It’s time to stop all this. Insult, out. You don’t play”
The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), LaLiga and the Higher Sports Council (CSD) have launched a campaign awareness to try to eradicate racism in the football stadiumsafter the insults uttered last Sunday at the Mestalla against the Brazilian Vinícius Júnior in the match between Valencia and Real Madrid.
Under the slogans ‘Racists, out of football’ and ‘Together against racism’, this initiative aims to unite the strength of institutions, clubs, athletes and fans with the aim of completely eliminating this scourge, and those who carry it out, in football Spanish. The sanctions for this type of behavior have increased by almost 40% in recent seasons.
Racism, a problem for years in Spanish football
The campaign, in addition to being seen on the broadcast signal of all the matches at a national and international level, on the so-called television fly, will also be present in the stadiums through information brochures for the fans. In the same way, it can also be seen in the bangles of the players and in the pancartas that the starting footballers will wear.
In addition, one of the actions will be the placement of a canvas on the field of play, before the start of the clash, with the message ‘Racists, outside of football’which will be supported by the members of both teams and by the referees.
Benjamín Zarandona, a former soccer player, denounces that, unfortunately, it is something that comes from afar. “It is what we have been experiencing, for many years, many black players in All Categories“he points out.
David Moscoso, professor of sociology at the University of Córdoba (UCO), says he explains that “people are not only insulted because of their skin color, but also referees, line judges and directives. They are a species of leviathan”. And he adds that “I think the political class feels very uncomfortable interfering in matters that they consider to be internal to football itself.”
The coach of the Football Club Barcelona, Xavi Hernandezhas also been forceful this week in his message: “It’s time to stop all this. Insult, get out. Do not play”.
The Government does not admit that such a scourge exists in our country
However, reality contradicts the government vision of the problem. “we are antiracist. In Spain they are persecuted and punished,” says the spokesperson for the central executive, Elizabeth Rodriguez.
The state commission against violence, racism, xenophobia and intolerance in sport concludes that “a greater involvement of the institutions is deemed necessary” because they are observed “shortages important in the application firm of imposition of sanctions“That is to say, that in most cases they are not carried out and thus serve as protection, they emphasize, for the repeat offender.
The president of the RFEF, Luis Rubialeshas stated that “the first thing is to recognize that we have a problem in our country, behavior, education and racism”. And also unity between the competent bodies, as Javier Tebas, president of LaLiga, has pointed out.
Moscoso sums up the situation well in a few words: “Spain is not a racist country, but it does have a problem with racism. The existing tools are not being properly applied.”
