Espanyol came out of the grave to make it clear that it is ready to fight until the end to keep the category. The white-and-blues were on the verge of completing a comeback that would have been historic against Atlético de Madrid (3-3) in a game that was losing 0-3 at the start of the restart and that being able to beat Joselu in a hand-to-hand game against Grbic with a few minutes to go. If you must die, so be it, stand up, showing pride and honor. Just what a fan who continues to support the team in this season that has turned into a long and slow agony demands and deserves. It was an absolutely crazy game in which Espanyol came back to life when everyone seemed to have lost faith. The tie is useless, because it leaves the white-and-blues three points away from salvation when there are six to play. Espanyol will need much more than epic, a carambola, to continue in Primera next season. Fighting like he did yesterday, though, miracles seem possible.

The white-and-blues left their souls in a match that they deserved to win in many moments. In the first half they did almost everything well: they dominated with dizzying movements inside and depth on the wings, surrounding Atlético and finishing most of the plays. They did everything that is asked of a team that is playing for its life and that only needs to win to stay in Primera. He played a spectacular game, accumulating the whole team in the opponent’s field, but it was of no use because Atlético, not at all amused by the local dominance, was the one who found the prize first. To begin with, Saúl with a low-angle shot. Then, Griezmann, who before the break forced Pacheco into an impossible stretch when the ball had already crossed the goal line. That, at least, was interpreted by the VAR, who had no mercy in the review of the play. The Madrid players, with very little, severely punished the inaction of a defense that did not move to reject a very clear triple chance.

Insufficient comeback

If Espanyol arrived with water up to their necks at the break, Atlético took it upon themselves to finish the job when they left the changing rooms. In the first play of the second half, Carrasco took advantage of another lapse in defense, which did not protect well a bad rebound from Pacheco. A slap in the face of reality for the few remaining optimists. The 0-3 unleashed a new wave of protests in the stands, which again demanded the resignation of the board of directors. On the pitch, despondency turned to helplessness until César Montes gave life with a header as some fans were already starting to march home. Espanyol, once again, showed again that it is a team that does not give up. What a pity that this character that he has shown in so many games, however, has not accompanied the colorful game that he impressed against Atlético.

Joselu, from the penalty spot, and Vinicius worked a miracle in a quarter of an hour. The white-and-blues came out of the grave in the last half hour of the match, taking advantage of the fact that the Madrid players did not want, or could, mark the fourth. The Spaniards caressed the goal, but the ball didn’t want to go in anymore. The victories of Valladolid and Getafe no longer leave any room for error: Espanyol will need to win at Mestalla on Sunday and at home against Almeria on the last day to look for a miracle.
