This Sunday was the last match of the 2022-2023 Eredivisie season. Traveling to Twente, Ajax Amsterdam had a slight hope of grabbing second place, synonymous with the qualifying phase for the next edition of the Champions League. For that, the Ajacides had to win and PSV lose at the same time on the ground of AZ Alkmaar. Eventually, the Amsterdammers’ ideal plan quickly turned sour.
Despite the opener from Dusan Tadic (31st), Ajax sank on goals from Ugalde (46th), Pleguezuelo (51st) and Cerny (75th). A loss (3-1) which condemned them to third place, especially since PSV won thanks to a double from Xavi Simons, who went for the title of co-top scorer in the Eredivisie with 19 goals to which must be added 8 assists. Next season, Ajax will therefore have to go through the play-offs to qualify for the… Europa League. In the other results of the day, the Feyenoord champion lost on the lawn of Vitesse Arnhem (1-0). A result that has no impact on the two teams.
