NFL superstar Aaron Rodgers’ move to New York is perfect. As at first ESPN and then announced the league, the Jets reached an agreement in principle after months of negotiations with Green Bay. The Packers confirmed the trade on Monday.
“I have incredible respect for Aaron, he’s done so much for us,” said Packers boss Brian Gutekunst. The deal is set to be made official on Tuesday.
In return, the Packers will receive a second-round pick (number 42), a traded first-round pick (13 instead of 15), and a sixth-round pick (207) for the year.
Additionally, a first-round pick will be added by the New Yorkers next year if Rodgers makes over 65 percent of the plays in the 2024 regular season. Otherwise, the second-round pick stands.
The Jets get a fifth-round pick (170) alongside Rodgers in exchange. The trade will save Green Bay over $50 million a year in salary.
Rodgers, known as “A-Rod”, had already expressed his intention to move to the Jets in March and thus ruled out the end of his career. The 39-year-old quarterback was drafted by Green Bay in 2005 and led the franchise to their fourth Super Bowl win in 2010.
His contract in Green Bay officially runs until the end of the 2026/27 season. 18 years and one day after the pick in the first round, Rodgers’ era with the Packers is over.
Rodgers has been named league MVP four times, most recently in 2020 and 2021. He will be succeeded by Jordan Love, who the team picked in the first round of the 2020 draft.
