THE BALL – Overloaded calendars and brain concussions at the table on the ‘Football Board’ (UEFA)

Coach José Mourinho was absent – Roma face Atalanta this Monday… – unlike Luís Figo and the current national coach, the Spanish Roberto Martínez, who were in Nyon (Switzerland) this Monday, at the headquarters of the UEFA, where they participated in the inaugural meeting of the new body created by the organisation, the Football Board, a sort of Council of Experts (Experts) to reflect on the best paths for the evolution of the game and competitions, and which includes former glories of pitches, whether former players, technicians or former coaches, and whose first conclusions and themes were known in the middle of the afternoon of this day.

The French Zidane, Patrick Vieira and Abidal, but also the current coach of Real Madrid, the Italian Carlo Ancelotti, and another legend of the Italian bench that goes by the name of Fabio Capello, or even Paolo Maldini (now director of Milan) also make up the new structure.

A batch of former stars including the Spanish coach Rafa Benítez, the Dane Michael Laudrup or the former German stars Jürgen Klinsmann, Philip Lahm and Rudi Völler.

Argentinian Javier Zanetti, Dutchman Ronald Koeman, English coach Gareth Southgate – as well as his compatriot Rio Ferdinand -, former Czech goalkeeper Petr Cech, Irishman Robbie Keane, Welshman Gareth Bale and Swede Henrik Larsson complete the ‘ Football Board’.

«A reflection group designed to give a more independent tone, with the experience of figures closely linked to football, to the institutional voice of UEFA», these are the goals of the group, outlined by a source from the European confederation, led by the Slovenian Aleksander Ceferin, at the L’Equipe.

The voice of the ‘experts’ – with unquestionable and enormous knowledge of experience gained – will be heard by UEFA in matters intimate to football, such as the laws of the game, refereeing, drawing up match schedules and the training and health of players.

At this Monday’s meeting, the focus was on refereeing, VAR and, in particular, on how to judge handball (foul) or ball in hand.

The international calendar, considered by almost all quarters of the professionals most closely involved – coaches and players – as, and allegedly, too overloaded with games, and the formation of UEFA competitions for the three-year period from 2024 to 2027 were other topics discussed , along with the danger of concussions in football.
