Qatar will host the FIBA ​​Basketball World Cup 2027, the international basketball governing body confirmed on Friday.

“The Qatar Basketball Federation (QBF) has secured the hosting rights for the FIBA ​​Basketball World Cup 2027, with all matches in the prestigious tournament to be played in the city of Doha which ensures that all venues used for this event Fiba’s flagship are already built,” said the International Federation (FIBA) in a statement.

Qatar will thus become the first country in the Middle East and Arab region to host the flagship event of men’s basketball.

“The Central Bureau was impressed with the bid submitted by QBF. I would like to congratulate them on behalf of the Bureau for the quality of the work they have already done to put this bid together. We are very happy to be able to award the Cup FIBA World Cup 2027 in Qatar,” said FIBA ​​President Hamane Niang.

The 2023 edition will be co-hosted by the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia from August 25 to September 10.

As a reminder, Qatar also hosted the FIFA World Cup for the first time in its history in 2022, which was also a first for an Arab country.

Its neighbors on the Arabian Peninsula, where the F1 Grand Prix have multiplied (Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Abu Dhabi), are not left out. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, host of the Dakar Rally since 2020, is considering a bid to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup, possibly in association with Greece and Egypt.
