On Saturday morning cyclist Yves Lampaert (32) and his girlfriend Astrid Demeulemeester (30) gave each other their yes in the town hall in Harelbeke. No known people, except teammate Tim Declercq who witnessed.

With a third place in the Classic Brugge-De Panne, the spring of Yves Lampaert, who rides for Soudal-Quick Step, was anything but a high flyer. But look, no luck in the game, then in love. That turned out to be Saturday morning.

With a radiant smile, the 32-year-old professional cyclist from Hulste stood at the town hall of Harelbeke to marry his 30-year-old partner Astrid Demeulemeester. Son Aloïs, now 20 months old, was also dressed tightly to accompany his mom and dad.

Yves met Astrid from Pittem eight years ago at the Pinksterbal in Kanegem, organized by – how could it be otherwise for a farmer’s son from Belgium – the local KLJ. The marriage was now solemnized before the law. “The church will be for next year, which is not easy with my planning.”

No large crowd had turned up at the town hall. Only teammate and best friend Tim Declercq was present, as he is also the witness. Present: a bowl of rice to surprise the newlyweds.
