The man who was arrested on Saturday for throwing a cup of beer at an assistant referee during the FC Groningen-NEC match was released on Sunday afternoon. Due to his action, the Eredivisie game was definitively stopped after eighteen minutes.
It concerns an eighteen-year-old man from Bedum in Groningen. It is not yet known whether charges have been filed against him.
The game was immediately stopped on Saturday at a 0-0 score, because the cup hit the assistant referee. If the cup had not touched the referee, the match would have resumed after a cooling-off period. That happened on Sunday at the top match between PSV and Ajax.
Security guards in the Euroborg immediately picked up the man and escorted him out of the stadium, after which the police took him away. FC Groningen-NEC will be played without an audience on Tuesday.
Last week, the duel between NAC and Willem II in the Kitchen Champion Division was the first match to be definitively discontinued after the stricter measures taken by the KNVB. The last fifteen minutes of that game will also be played without an audience on Tuesday. Willem II starts with a 0-1 lead.
