Kvitova talks about the decision of Russians and Belarusians Wimbledon

Peter Kvitov will be in the final Miami Open 2023 at 33 years old, leaving only one set along the way. Even so, the Czech tennis player has had to suffer a lot to turn around matches that seemed quite complicated. Petra, number 12 in the world, speaks at a press conference about her good work on the Miami courts, the keys to her success and shares her opinion about the Wimbledon decision to let Russians and Belarusians play.

Final at Miami Open at last

“I am very happy, that is for sure, I have been waiting a long time to reach the final at the Miami Open 2023 and I have finally achieved it. It has been very difficult, so I am very happy to have done it and to have a chance to play in the final. I know she was serving 40-15 to close out the set. I just put two good scraps inside her and she missed a bit too. So I kept my momentum and was better with my serve. That was key, it was very hard”, explains the Czech player.

Her first WTA 1000 final was 12 years ago for Petra

“Yes, it’s been a while. I’ve never been a consistent player, I have to say. I am more of ups and downs, perhaps with age I have more experience. I’m proud of myself, how I’ve handled matches, especially when I was down. It’s something really important. As everyone knows, I love playing finals”.

“Conditions in Indian Wells and Miami are pretty much the same”

“I had been playing well from Indian Wells. Losing in the quarterfinals hurt, a difficult game against Maria. I’ve been improving since the moment I got here. I felt good on the track. It’s different, but the balls here fly a lot, the track is somewhat faster. I think all conditions are pretty much the same. My serve has been very important to me throughout the tournament.

On Wimbledon’s decision to let Russians and Belarusians participate

“I am always against the war. I am more concerned about the Ukrainian people and their players. I understand that Wimbledon had a hard time last year without giving points to the Belarusians and Russians who played. I think they shouldn’t be allowed to go to the Olympics either. I am a little on the side of the Ukrainians in all this. I feel like the reason the Olympics exist is because we don’t want any war in the world. So that’s my concern. I am grateful that Wimbledon did not host them last year.
