“Jēkabpils lynxes” win bronze medals in the Latvian championship

The “Jēkabpils lynxes” volleyball team ended the season on Saturday, defeating “Vecumniekus” at home in the second match of the bronze series. In the first match of the series, the Jäkabpilians won 3-0 in Misa, and the same result was recorded in the second game as well.

The people of Jäkabpils started the first two sets with 4:0 and 4:1 respectively, winning safely with 25:16 and 25:18. The people of Jēkabpils also started the third set with a big advantage – 5:0. In the middle of the set, it was only 13:12, but at the end the teams played point by point. The guests even had a set ball with the score 24:25, but it was played back by Armands Āboliņš. He also scored 26 points. The home team made a mistake in the serve, the guests – in the attack, but Kristers Landzāns added a point for the game and the season – 28:26 in the set, 3:0 – in the game and 2:0 – in the bronze series. Andrii Chmirov and Kristers Landzāns scored 17 points for the “Lynx” and scored 11 points.

Jānis Jansons, Armands Āboliņš, Andrijs Chmirovs, Zigurds Adamovičs, Kristers Landzāns, Marats Selivanovs were in the starting lineup of “Lūšu” in this match. The two liberos – Dāvis Melnis and Ernests Krakops, as well as Ralfs Kļaviņš, Daniels Žukovskis, Edgars Kalnozols and Edijs Krakops – also contributed to the victory. Leo Catlakšs and Kārlis Jaundžeikars were also in the application for the game.

The four-time Latvian champions have to settle for a bronze medal this season, losses were also experienced in the Super Cup and the Latvian Cup, as well as in the quarter-finals of the Baltic League, however, it should be taken into account that in the last two years many leading players have left the team, while during the season the “lynxes” were plagued by injuries.

“Before the season, I wouldn’t say that the result was normal, but objective reasons – injuries – were the cause. Throughout the season, if we had played in the optimal lineup, it would have been much better, but practically every match had to be played in a different lineup. The Jūrmala and Daugavpils clubs were more balanced this season. I’m not sad about the bronze medals, but I’m not very happy either. There are enough new faces in the team and that bodes well for the future. In the near future, we will do everything to return to the finals,” coach Mārcis Obrumans told volejbols.lv after winning the medals. On the other hand, the leader of the team’s attack, Ukrainian legionnaire Andriys Chmirovs, admitted that in Jēkabpils he got to such a club for the first time, where everything is done for the benefit of the team and players. It gave fighting spirit and motivation.

In the series for gold medals, in which “RTU/Robežsardze/Jūrmala” competes with “Ezerzemi/DU” led by former “lynx” Rihardas Pukišis, the result is 2:2. The decisive match will take place tomorrow, April 19, in Daugavpils.
