Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors survive a gala performance by De’Aaron Fox and win against the Sacramento Kings 126-125. With that, the Dubs level the series at 2-2.
Golden State Warriors (W6) – Sacramento Kings (W3) 126:125 (BOXSCORE), Serie: 2-2
What do you do about the problems without Stephen Curry on the court? “We’ll just leave it on,” Steve Kerr chuckled during a pre-fourth-quarter interview. Not a bad idea. The dubs star had to run his wide circles on the court for almost 43 minutes. He scored 32 points with 11/22 FG and 5/11 threes. That was also badly needed, because the Clutch Player of the Year – De’Aaron Fox – turned up the heat again in the fourth quarter after a strong first half (38 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists in total). But even he could not prevent the 2-2 series equalizer of the Warriors.
Draymond Green came off the bench after his suspension in Game 3 and contributed a double-double (12 points, 10 rebounds, 7 assists), but often wanted too much offensively (3/14 FG). His replacement in the starting five, Jordan Poole, did a good job giving Curry important breathers (22 points). Klay Thompson put on a good showing after a poor showing in Game 3 (26 points, 4/9 trebles). Andrew Wiggins quietly came up with 18 points and 8 rebounds. His defense was a little louder with four crashing blocks.
The Kings once again had to compensate for a mixed performance by Domantas Sabonis (14 points, 7 rebounds, but 8 assists). The center again lost the duel on the boards against Kevon Looney (8, 14). Keegan Murray has finally made it to the playoffs. After 10 points in the first three games, the rookie was finally able to justify his starting place (23 points, 5/7 threes). Malik Monk, on the other hand, had problems with the throw again (16 points, 5/14 FG).
Both teams gave each other nothing (except, of course, baskets). The pace remained – as expected – very high, and a lively exchange of blows developed early on. Curry had 8 points in the first quarter, but was topped by Fox (10 points), who put up a three-pointer to give the Kings a 32-31 lead at quarter-break.
NBA Playoffs – Golden State Warriors: Stephen Curry takes wrong timeout
Domantas Sabonis’ passing game developed better because the throws of the colleagues finally fell again (45 percent three-pointers at the break). Murray in particular was extremely accurate. The Lithuanian had 6 assists at half time (plus 8 points). The dubs hit the three even better (47.1 percent), Curry welded Miracle throws through the trap. Despite this, Sacramento retained a narrow 69-65 lead. That was down to Fox, who continued to stay hot and recorded 11 points in the second quarter (21 total at halftime).
Then in the third quarter, Fox got special treatment and was alternately defended by Green and Wiggins. That had an effect on the Kings star. Only one of his six throws landed in the basket. Poole did better, constantly threatening the Kings defense and not being intimidated by a hard foul from Alex Len. Golden State’s ball movement was also a feast for the eyes. This play in front of the buzzer was a pure pleasure.
Murray, who was able to hit a couple of threes in the first half, continued to be a factor for Sacramento. Of course, this also applied to the chef, who was able to shake off Davion Mitchell’s special guard (who would probably also defend him in the toilet) again and again. Fox continued to buck the good shooting of the dubs. But Monk and Sabonis had problems with the bilious Draymond, who also ended up checking Fox again.
However, the Warriors almost self-sabotaged. Curry took a timeout even though the dubs were out and conceded a T, possession of the ball changed and Fox got the ball again. Fox hit the ball with an extremely difficult three-pointer over the green and shortened the lead to 125:126. After that, Curry pulled to the basket early, leaving Sacramento with 10 seconds. But it wasn’t enough. The Warriors defended too well in last position. “We had to have someone throw the ball other than Fox,” Curry said right after the game. That someone was Harrison Barnes, whose threesome just smacked the ring.
