Gasly avoided a penalty and a ban from starting in the race – F1sport.cz

After a collision with a teammate, Pierre Gasly avoided a penalty that would have had unpleasant consequences for him.

The sports commissioners only published the result of the investigation into the collision between Gasly and Ocon from the restart two laps before the end of the race shortly before 15:00 our time.

If Gasly was found to be “predominantly” or “completely” at fault, he would likely receive a penalty for the next race. However, penalty points would be much worse for him. The sports commissioners have been more lenient in this regard since this season, but this applies more to minor violations, such as track limits. Two to three points are usually awarded for collisions. Gasly already has 10 today, so he was in real danger of reaching 12 points and being banned from the race.

“First Round” Racing Incident

The sports commissioners heard both riders. They also looked at data and video. They then took advantage of a “rule” or rather an agreement whereby first round collisions are treated more leniently. In reality, of course, it was not the first round, but the first round after the restart.

For this reason, the accident was labeled a “racing incident”. Both riders accepted this decision according to the stewards. “Under the circumstances, we have taken no further action,” the stewards added.
