FC Emmen did excellent business on Saturday in the fight against relegation from the Eredivisie. Thanks to a hat-trick by Ole Romeny, coach Dick Lukkien’s team booked a nice 2-3 win at sc Heerenveen. Competitors Vitesse and Excelsior played a goalless draw.
Romeny scored the winning goal in the 92nd minute at the Abe Lenstra Stadium. The attacker worked a high cross with the body behind goalkeeper Xavier Mous, who also had no answer to a bet from Romeny in the 47th and 75th minutes.
For example, Romeny became the man of the match, while it seemed for a long time that Sydney van Hooijdonk would be. The sc Heerenveen striker scored two goals (the 1-0 and the 2-1) and therefore passed Xavi Simons and Anastasios Douvikas on the top scorers list.
Van Hooijdonk is now the only Eredivisie top scorer with fifteen goals, but will attach little importance to that due to the defeat. The defeat means a costly loss of points for the Frisians in the battle for a place in the play-offs for European football.
FC Emmen sees Excelsior and Vitesse lose points
FC Emmen climbs to the ‘safe’ fifteenth place due to the victory in Heerenveen at the expense of Excelsior. The team from Rotterdam needed a victory later in the evening to regain that place, but played a goalless draw when visiting Vitesse.
The draw still counts as a point won for Excelsior, because the team from Rotterdam was pushed back into the GelreDome, especially in the second half. Excelsior owed it to some nice saves by goalkeeper Stijn van Gassel that it remained 0-0.
FC Emmen and Excelsior now have the same number of points (28), but based on goal difference, the Drents are fifteenth. The gap between both teams on Vitesse is only three points. The number sixteen must play play-offs at the end of the season to avoid relegation.
