Austria’s football mourns the loss of ex-team player Johann “Buffy” Ettmayer. The 30-time ÖFB team player died on Saturday at the age of 76. The ÖFB confirmed the death of the Viennese on its website.
The former midfielder played for Austria Wien, Wacker Innsbruck and VfB Stuttgart, where he rose to captain and crowd favourite. Ettmayer made 30 appearances for the national team between 1968 and 1975, scoring none. The ÖFB will “always remember Ettmayer with gratitude”.

Born in Vienna, he was known and loved not only for his skills on the pitch, but also for his open, humorous manner. Ettmayer always dealt directly with the fact that his weight did not correspond to the typical image of a competitive athlete, even by the standards of the time.
In an interview with the specialist magazine “11Freunde” he once explained that during his playing days at a height of 1.72 meters he “always weighed between 83 and 85 kilos”. “I like to eat, and I especially like sweets. Cake, ice cream, chocolate,” Ettmayer was quoted as saying.
