WTA > Tarpischev (president of the Russian Federation) responds to Swiatek and the WTA: “I haven’t heard that you can’t enter the court with a jersey from a football club. It’s not not a coat of arms or a flag”

The Anastasia Potapova case continues to make noise.

Sunday before the match against Jessica Pegula in Indian Wells, the Russian entered the court wearing a Spartak Moscow jersey. World number 1 Iga Swiatek had quickly criticized this decision and discussed with the WTA, which finally gave a warning to the 28e world player.

It was enough for the sulphurous president of the Russian Tennis Federation, Shamil Tarpischev, to come out of silence.

“I haven’t heard that you can’t go out in club shirts. It is not a coat of arms or a flag”dropped Tarpischev in remarks reported by Essentially Sports.

A statement that is unlikely to ease the tension in a tense context on the women’s circuit, where Ukrainian players accuse the CEO of the WTA, Steve Simon, of being too lax with Russian and Belarusian players.
