Victor Perez defeated by Collin Morikawa in World Match-Play Championship

Opposed to world No. 11, Victor Perez failed after his first group match. After a strong draw for the Frenchman, this first match was undoubtedly the most complicated for him, against a sizeable opponent. Despite a good start from the first hole of this Wednesday, the Tarbais was quickly caught by the winner of the PGA Championship 2020, leading the rest of the game. It was with a score of (2/1) that the American won, taking off at hole n°10 with 2up. Victor Perez was able to close the gap with a birdie at hole n°13, before once again giving the advantage to his opponent, back to 2up at hole n°14.

“It’s a huge positive momentum, good self-confidence, said the 26-year-old American. Obviously the ideal would be to win all three, but you have to start somewhere, and it’s good to take a point from the start and move forward hoping to continue to improve,”

The Habs will face Australian Jason Day this Thursday at 6:27 p.m., victorious against Canadian Adam Svensson by a score of (4/3). An important match for Perez to qualify for the semi-finals and join the top 50 to participate in the Masters.

Rahm beaten, McIlroy and Scheffler win

Regarding the other matches of this first day of competition in Austin, Rickie Fowler created a surprise by winning against world No. 2 Jon Rahm with a score of (2/1): “I knew it would be difficult, but Jon didn’t play very well today, said Rickie Fowler. He did not play as usual on the greens. It’s match play. We never know what awaits us. You just have to beat the player you’re up against. I was lucky to get out. I know he will be difficult to beat in the next matches. I have to take care of my game because there is a chance that I will face it again. »

Defending champion and world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler won with 1up over his compatriot Davis Riley: “Yes, I didn’t give my best today, Scheffler said. I made too many mistakes throughout the round and had a few chances to take the lead, made a few mistakes, but luckily made a really nice putt on the 18.”

For his part, world No. 3 Rory McIlroy is also victorious against American Scott Stallings. Sam Burns – (3/2) over Adam Hadwin – and Patrick Cantlay – 1up over Nick Taylor – also won, unlike Norway’s Viktor Hovland, beaten by Matt Kuchar (3/1) and the winner of the WGC Match-Play 2019 , Kevin Kisner losing to the Japanese Hideki Matsuyama (1up).

The match between the winner of the tournament in 2021, Billy Horschel and Keith Mitchell ended in a tie between the two players like the match between Keegan Bradley against Denny McCarthy.
