‘Ventspils’ loses to Tartu basketball players in the second match; will be the deciding game in the series

On Friday, the “Ventspils” team lost to the “University of Tartu”/”Maks & Moorits” led by Nikolaj Mazur in the second game of the quarterfinals of the “Pafbet” Latvian-Estonian Basketball League (LIBL), which reached 1-1 in the series with two wins.

In the match held on their field, Ventspils lost with the result 79:88 (23:24, 20:26, 15:15, 21:23).

Guntis Sīpoliņš stood out for Kurzem with 19 points and 14 rebounds, Artūrs Ausės scored 15 points and had six steals, while Emanuëls Vembi and Linards Jaunzems had 11 points each.

Andriy Vojnalovic scored 21 points for the visiting team and Jiteurius Gordon added 20 points.

In the game held in Tartu on Friday, Ventspils made 18 out of 33 long shots, or 55%, Ausei made eight of them, while on Wednesday, Kurzeme club’s basketball players made eight of the three-point shots, or 24%.

The decisive match of the series will take place on Saturday in Tartu, where the opponent of the winner of the duel between Slobojanska “Prometey” and “Viimsi” will be determined in the semifinals.

In the first match, Ventspils won away from home with the result 90:80.

In other series, “Prometey” from Slobojansk is leading with 1-0 against “Viimsi”, and “Kalev”/”Cramo” from Tallinn is leading against “Ogri”.

“VEF Rīga” reached the final four as the first team, which beat Rapla’s “Avis Utilitas” 2-0 and will meet the winner of the pair of teams from Tallinn and Ogre in the semi-finals.

The final tournament will take place on April 7 and 8 in Tallinn.

Latvia is represented in the tournament by six teams – “VEF Rīga”, “Ventspils”, “Ogre”, “University of Latvia”, “Valmiera Glass”/”Vidzemes Augstskola” and “Liepāja”. Estonia is represented by nine teams – “Parnu Sadam”, “University of Tartu”/”Maks & Moorits”, Tallinn “Kalev”/”Cramo”, Tallinn “TalTech”, Rapla “Avis Utilitas”, Rakvere “Tarvas”, Tallinn ” Kalev”/”Audentes”, “Viimsi” and newcomer “Keila”. The Ukrainian team “Prometey” of Slobojansk also competes in the tournament. The Ukrainian team is participating in the LIBL competition for the first time.

The best men’s basketball clubs of Latvia and Estonia played in a joint championship for the first time in the 2019 season, when 15 teams participated. In the “Final 4” tournament, “Ventspils” basketball players became the first winners of the league.

Last year, “VEF Rīga” basketball players were crowned LIBL champions, who beat “Viimsi” in the decisive match, while “Parna Sadam” won bronze.
