Union striker Leweling: “Difficult, but you have to get through it”

Jamie Leweling hasn’t really arrived at 1. FC Union yet. This also has something to do with the fact that he has a similar playing style to Sheraldo Becker.

No getting past: Jamie Leweling (right) is usually used as a joker, Sheraldo Becker has the edge.

IMAGO/Contrast

Jamie Leweling has not yet really picked up speed at 1. FC Union Berlin. The development of the summer new signing is currently stagnating because the 22-year-old only gets a few minutes of action. He has never been in the starting XI. A small ray of hope: At least in the past few weeks, he has been able to prove himself as a joker.

“I also know what I need to do better”

Of course, that is not Leweling’s claim, who switched from Bundesliga relegated SpVgg Greuther Fürth to Berlin-Köpenick in the summer for around four million euros, to have a regular place on the substitutes’ bench. “I talk to the coach a lot. I also know what I have to do better,” said the striker in a media round of the German U-21 national team.

When asked, however, he did not want to reveal what emerged from this conversation with coach Urs Fischer. “That stays between the coach and me.” The fact is that he wants to play more. And not just as a third or fourth choice. “I’m trying to work my way into the starting XI. But we’re also doing very well at the moment. And the manager has his line-up,” said Leweling.

“Must take a lot with me as a young player”

And in this formation, the fast and dribbling strong attacker rarely appears. Which also has to do with the fact that Fischer has two different types of strikers in the dual leadership. On the one hand, the beefy wall player who is strong in the air and who can nail the ball. On the other hand, the more agile and fast-paced offensive player who seeks depth and goes into one-on-one situations.

Someone like Leweling. Or Union Berlin’s top scorer Sheraldo Becker. “He’s having a good season and is a leader,” said Leweling. “The game is tailored to him. As a young player I have to take a lot with me. It’s difficult for me, but you have to go through it.”

U-21 European Championship goal: “The coaches know what I can do”

Leweling now has an opportunity to prove himself for another season at the club with the U-21 team. Coach Antonio Di Salvo’s team is playing friendlies against Japan and Romania during the Bundesliga break. “I got a chance to show myself here.”

Born in Nuremberg, he has been there since the first course of the new year, he only missed last November. “The coaches know me, they know what I’m capable of,” confirmed Leweling, who would of course like to be in the squad for the European Championships in June. In order to do self-promotion for this goal, it also requires more playing time in the club. Now he wants to fight for it…
