Union flushes cup hangover with victory against Eupen, despite (missed) ghost penalty for visitors

Union knows how to win again. After a 1 out of 9 in the league and the elimination in the cup, Eupen beat 2-1 on Sunday evening. Adingra and Vertessen scored for Union, Prevljak’s connection goal came too late. In between, Moris stopped a (ghost) penalty from Prevljak. Thanks to the victory, Union is approaching eight points from leader Genk, Eupen has not yet dispelled the relegation ghost.

The home game against Eupen was one that had to be won by Union. And that happened. The pandas proved to be in relegation distress and hardly offered any resistance. Not that Union itself played so fantastically, but well.

The opening fifteen minutes seemed to pass silently, until Simon Adingra shook everyone up: with a wonderful movement and ditto place ball, he gave Union the early lead. There is no better way to start a match against such a low block.

The rest of the first act can be briefly summarized. On the Brussels side, only Nilsson and Lazare threatened, albeit without success. The team from Brussels did see Teuma drop out with an injury, and that is not good news in view of the move to Union Berlin next Thursday. And the Pandas? They got no further than a few timid attempts that may not make it to the summary on Sports Late Night. (Read more below the photo)

They also know at Union that a 1-0 lead remains tricky. That is why Vertessen made it 2-0 early in the second half. The fact that the Eupense defense was sleeping a bit at Lynen’s free kick, of course helped a bit. Although Vertessen finished it off nicely.

Spookpenalty

The game seemed over, until Eupen was awarded a penalty out of the blue ten minutes before the end. With the emphasis on ‘got’. Prevljak went down eagerly in the box, although Moris didn’t seem to hit him. Denil resolutely pointed to the spot, the VAR did not intervene. Fortunately for Union, Moris saved the day. In added time, Prevljak finally scored the tying goal, but it came too late.

Union knows how to win again, so that peace can return to Sint-Gillis. There is no question of rest in Eupen: with 26 points, it camps just above the relegation zone.
