Hamburg (dpa / lno) – An additional S-Bahn tunnel is to be built between Hamburg Central Station and Altona to improve local and long-distance traffic. A feasibility study now shows that five route variants can be implemented, Deutsche Bahn announced on Monday. With the participation of the public, a decision is to be made as to which variant is to be implemented.
“The new S-Bahn tunnel is a core element of the Deutschlandtakt in the north of the republic. Bundling the S-Bahn services in one tunnel will free up rail capacity in the main station and on the connecting line to Altona,” said Michael Theurer (FDP) , the Federal Government Commissioner for Rail Transport. Overall, the train should be more punctual and be able to transport more passengers, said the Hamburg Senator for Transport and Mobility, Anjes Tjarks (Greens). The Deutschlandtakt is the prerequisite for this.
