Hamburg (dpa/lno) – A victory is also just won: And the hard-fought 89:87 (44:45) success of the Veolia Towers Hamburg against the Italian representative Trento on Tuesday evening in the Eurocup was a particularly important one for the club. While the Hanseatic League is stuck in the bottom third of the table in the Basketball Bundesliga, they are safely in eighth place in Group B in the European competition with one game day to go before the end of the main round and thus, like last year, in the playoff round of 16.

The praise from head coach Benka Barloschky was corresponding: «Today I am very proud of the team. Today it was about rewarding us for working hard every day and always doing our best in the Eurocup.” The playoff participation is something very special, the 35-year-old added: “I told the players that they should by no means take it for granted. This is something extraordinary and may not happen again any time soon.”

In the changeable game, Anthony Polite, with 27 points also the best Hamburger, threw out the decisive lead with a three pointer to 89:84 in the final phase. Although the guests reduced the deficit to two points with 90 seconds to go, neither team wanted to score anything that could be counted. They communicated well with each other and found a solution to problems, Polite gave reasons for the success and emphasized: “We always stayed positive and acted as a team.”
