Badminton fans prepare for the start of the 2023 All England Open Badminton Championships. The iconic tournament will take place from March 14-19, 2023 and contains a total prize pool of $1,250,000.
It’s a Super 1000 tournament that will attract the best badminton stars from around the world. Last year’s winners will face stiff competition from the challengers as they prepare to defend their crowns. No Indian has won the tournament in the past 22 years, adding pressure to the current crop of commuters.
There are plenty of top players who will make their mark at the All England Open badminton championships in several categories. Here is an overview of the top 10 people to watch:
Satwiksairaj Rankireddy/Chirag Shetty
When it comes to men’s doubles, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty represent India’s best hopes for victory. The duo have achieved some incredible feats lately and will be supporting each other at the top of a tough class. The bronze medalists from the 2022 World Championships will be one to watch.
Lakshya Sen’s recent form is troubling to say the least. That said, the 21-year-old is one of the best singles players in the Indian ranks. The 2022 Commonwealth Games gold medalist was the runner-up at the All England Open last time out. He hopes to use the stage to spin up his season.
PV Sindhu will be one of the big names in the ladies’ singles category. The two-time Olympic medalist is unranked due to her recent performances and injury issues. She would aim to improve on her second-round result at the 2022 edition of the English Open Championships.
Chen Yufei came close to winning the All England Open Championship last year. She lost in the semifinals to eventual winner Akane Yamaguchi of Japan. Heading into the 2023 edition of the tournament, the Chinese commuter is the fourth seed and one of the favorites for the women’s singles title.
Similar to Chen Yufei, Tai Tzu-Ying also lost in the semi-finals of the 2022 All England Open Championships. The commuter from Chinese Taipei is the third seed heading into the 2023 edition of the tournament and will be one to watch in the women’s singles category.
Men’s singles is one of the most competitive categories at the All England Open Championships. Antony Ginting hopes to do better than last year’s quarter-final in the tournament. He is the third seed in this category and could face Prannoy HS or Lakshya Sen later in the tournament as they are all in the same section of the group.
An Se-young is prolific and she will finally aim to win the All England Open championships. She finished second last year, after losing in the final to Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi. The world No. 2 is also the second seed heading into the tournament. She finished second at the Malaysia Open earlier this year, again losing to Yamaguchi.
Jonatan Christie is a joy to watch. He is the second seed in men’s singles and is one of the few people who can stop the top seed from defending the title. The world No. 2 in the BWF rankings reached the quarters last time but is one of the favorites for the 2023 edition.
Akane Yamaguchi is the No. 1 seed heading into the 2023 All England Open Championship. She is the defending champion and will be a big favorite to win the women’s singles title again. The two-time World Championship gold medalist is also the world number one heading into the tournament.
Many consider Viktor Axelsen to be Europe’s greatest commuter. The world No. 1 player in the men’s singles ranking is the defending champion of the All England Open Championship in this category. The Denmark commuter also won the Malaysia Open earlier this year.
