Toby Alderweireld bravely pushes Zulte Waregem a little deeper into the pit with two goals in the end

The 31st match day was kicked off today by Zulte Waregem and Antwerp. Despite the heavy rain and wind, both teams had to look for points.

The weather was not pleasant, but the rain and wind could not prevent Zulte Waregem and Antwerp from kicking off the 31st matchday tonight. At Zulte Waregem they could again call on Ruud Vormer, who, like Antwerp players Toby Alderweireld and Calvin Stengs, were again in the starting line-up. Zulte Waregem, which is still battling against relegation to 1B, could of course use points. Antwerp was certain of a place in the Champions’ play-offs with a victory. So there was a lot at stake tonight for both teams, but in the opening phase there was not much to notice. The game started slowly and apart from an attempt by Balikwisha that went wide, there was no goal danger in the opening fifteen minutes.

In the sixteenth minute, Kerk was able to tap the ball through to Muja, but his effort was processed into a corner kick with a clever reflex from Louis Bostyn. Looked like that corner kick The Great Old also get ahead. Toby Alderweireld coolly headed the ball into the net, but the goal was disallowed after Bert Put was called to the screen. No lead for Antwerp, everything to redo. Bee Essevee they had been forewarned. Ten minutes later, the home team also created a goal threat for the first time. The fast Fadera broke through with a good counter. His attempt was blocked and a good reflex was needed from Jean Butez, who managed to prevent the 1-0. There was still a great chance for Calvin Stengs, but he decided wildly over. All in all, we saw a disappointing first half with only little danger of goal.

After the break, the field was clearly a bit heavier than in the first, but of course football had to continue. After a lot of kicking back and forth, it was the home team that scored the first goal danger in the second period. Via Brüls and Ndour, the ball reached Jelle Vossen’s feet. The experienced striker saw his attempt turned into a corner kick by Butez and so he got The Great Old already a serious warning after barely five minutes of play after the break. Afterwards, Antwerp quietly took over the game. At Zulte Waregem they held up well by working extremely hard and continuing to play well in the organization. Antwerp could be dangerous for the first time on the hour mark, but Kerk’s attempt was too weak to beat Bostyn.

Toby to the rescue

There is no shortage of effort at Zulte Waregem, but creating really good opportunities remained difficult throughout the match. Yet it was not the easiest game for the defense of Antwerp. The fast Ndour and Fadera let Bataille and De Laet get the most out of it and Jelle Vossen certainly did not go wrong during rush hour. Bee The Great Old it mainly lacked creativity, because they did have possession. Calvin Stengs tried to force something a few times, but the Dutchman was far from converting all those good intentions into concrete target danger. A few minutes before the end, Stengs managed to deliver an assist. Toby Alderweireld headed a cross from him hard against the nets. A cold shower for the players of Essevee, but that shower got even colder because a minute later the ball hit the spot after a handball. Who but Toby Alderweireld popped The Great Old to a 0-2 win. Painful for Zulte Waregem, but in the end a deserved victory for the visitors.
