Thomas Tuchel presented as the new Bayern coach – sport

Even a Champions League winner is apparently not prepared for all eventualities in the football business. Thomas Tuchel, who takes over the coaching position from Julian Nagelsmann, which surprisingly quickly became vacant at FC Bayern, explained at his presentation on Saturday afternoon in Munich that he was “very naive” in the first conversation with Munich sports director Hasan Salihamidzic on Tuesday.

Bayern’s interest came as a “total surprise” to him. “I didn’t know what we were discussing and what it was about,” admitted Tuchel, but that didn’t stop him from signing a contract that was valid until June 30, 2025 rather quickly.

Most recently, the 49-year-old was under contract with Chelsea FC in London – with whom he had won the “premier class” title in 2021.

Tuchel ends up at Bayern – he actually wanted to work abroad

He actually “assumed that I would continue my career abroad,” explained Tuchel, who is said to have been involved with Tottenham Hotspur and Real Madrid. “I had to sleep and think about it first.” However, the “size of the task” outweighed the doubts.

Tuchel will again work with his proven assistant coaches Arno Michels and Zsolt Löw on Säbener Straße. “My coaching team wasn’t prepared either, so a big thank you to the families for their flexibility,” said Tuchel.

Goalkeeper coach Michaelrechner, who was recently hired at Nagelsmann’s request, will also be part of Tuchel’s staff. “He’s going on, he’s an absolute top man and will stay with us,” said sporting director Salihamidzic. rechner had succeeded Toni Tapalovic. The injured captain and national goalkeeper Manuel Neuer was massively upset by Nagelsmann’s separation from his intimate Tapalovic.

Tuchel sees Bayern as “one of the best and most talented squads in Europe”

Tuchel sees the position with the series master as an “honor and distinction”. The first competitive game will be on April 1st, the opponent will then be Tuchel’s former club and current leaders Borussia Dortmund. Against BVB he wanted to “set the first exclamation mark” immediately, said Tuchel.

At Bayern, Tuchel sees “one of the best and most talented squads in Europe, which of course puts me under pressure”. You can “play for every title with this squad”.

The bosses no longer believed that this top-class squad could have achieved the traditionally high goals of the record champions with Nagelsmann. CEO Oliver Kahn justified the exemption at the press conference as follows: “It is our duty and our task to ensure sporting success.”

Bayern bosses on Nagelsmann-Aus: “It wasn’t a panic reaction”

The change of coach in the middle of the decisive phase of the season is “not a panic reaction”, explained Kahn: “It has nothing to do with panic at all.” The decision to release Nagelsmann on Friday was “well thought out” and not a decision based on emotion. “I know it’s not a popular decision,” admitted sporting director Salihamidzic.

An outstanding Champions League season (eight games, eight wins), reaching the DFB Cup quarter-finals and second place in the Bundesliga – obviously not enough sporting success for Kahn and his board colleagues. The management felt compelled to act because of the constant fluctuations in shape because “the performance curve is constantly going down”, as Salihamidzic said. The constellation between coach and team no longer fit.

So now it’s up to Tuchel to fix it. The new player “doesn’t want to talk his players to death”, after all, not all stars are “happy” about the change in the coaching bench: “You gain trust the quickest when you go out on the pitch together.” That will be the case for the first time on Monday.
