Paal Golberg won this Sunday at the world championships in Planica, Slovenia.
The Norwegian Paal Golberg won Sunday in Planica (Slovenia) the prestigious title of world champion in the 50 km classic style, the last event of the Worlds-2023 cross-country skiing, marked by the 9th place of the young Frenchman Théo Schely.
Golberg, 32, sprinted ahead of his compatriot Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo, 2nd at 1 sec, and Sweden’s William Poromaa, 3rd at 1 sec 2/10th to offer himself his third world title in Planica after gold in sprint by teams and relays. Norway flew over the men’s events, winning all the titles and a total of twelve medals out of a possible 14!
For his first appearance in a World Championship, Schely, 25, caused a sensation by appearing in the leading group until six kilometers from the finish. The cross-country skier from La Clusaz, the first non-Nordic in this 50 km, finished in 9th place, 54 seconds behind the winner of the day. His best result in the World Cup so far is a 13th place in … sprint in March 2022 in Drammen (Norway). The French team leaves Planica with two medals, in bronze, won by Jules Chappaz in the sprint, and by Renaud Jay and Richard Jouve in the team sprint.
