The National Assembly adopts the “Olympic Games” bill and its security component at first reading

The National Assembly on Tuesday largely adopted the “Olympic and Paralympic Games” bill, a text which includes a large security component to prepare and protect the high mass of world sport which will take place in France from July 26, 2024.

The opposition is wary of a technology that could be maintained after the Olympics

Already comfortably validated in the Senate at the end of January, the bill was approved by 400 votes against 93. If the stated objective is to secure the millions of people expected for the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, opposition deputies suspect the executive to want to use the experience as a springboard to generalize a new monitoring technology after the event.

So-called “intelligent” video surveillance combines images taken by cameras and drones, and algorithms. Never implemented in France, the experimentation of this technique will concern large-scale “sporting, recreational or cultural events”. It must stop on December 31, 2024 but can start as early as this Tuesday after the promulgation of the law. The next Rugby World Cup which will start on September 8 could serve as a first test.
