After the rabbits, the goats or the hens, new residents have just taken up residence in the ODCVL mansion of Argueil (Seine-Maritime).

The structure has just acquired 10 poneys, to maintain the riding activity of the domain. The cooperative society of collective interest (SCIC) took the opportunity to hire new people, including a manager of equestrian activitiesJeanne Manneville.

“For years, we had a partnership with a worker, Catherine, who came with her own animals and gave lessons within the manor itself,” explains Julien Marchois, deputy director of the structure since 2015.

The latter being close to retirement, a secondary solution had to be found.

Horse riding is part of Normandy, continues the manager. It was inconceivable to stop this activity. So we made the choice to buy some, because we had the space to accommodate them on our estate.

Desensitize young animals

Arrived in October 2022 to supervise the practice of horse riding, Jeanne Manneville has a first important mission: prepare the ponies to the human presence, in particular of more or less young children. “Of the 10 animals, there are still some that are not ready to be approached. So I get used to them, by making noises, running, clapping my hands,” explains Jeanne.

Jeanne also takes care of the rest of the educational farm.

There are many animals, so it takes a lot of time to take care of them every day. Fortunately, I’m not alone and we have a solid team.

Many activities at the manor

The manor of Argueil can accommodate at the same time 70 students under 6 years old, or 130 elementals. Many of them come from the Paris region. And of course, the animals have their effect.

“It’s a real asset, especially since we have a large enclosed green space. There can be many classes at the same time on the site without anyone crossing paths, except during meals,” emphasizes Julien Marchois.

Between the archerycourses to learn cycling with the “Savoir Rouler” program (inaugurate this year) or the science lab, the manor’s animators or teachers have plenty to keep the children occupied.

If children, whether in classes or in colonies, are the priority targets of the structure, the latter can accommodate adults in low season or on weekends. “We have already received groups of hikers, for example,” recalls the deputy director.

If covid has forced the mansion to bow its back, things are back to normal. “Teachers want to move”.

Next meeting on Monday April 10 with the mansion egg hunt.
