There was a huge sensation in this edition of the Dutch Cup. Amateur club SV Spakenburg, who defeated Utrecht 4-1 in the previous round, will play in the semi-finals of this competition. This is the third time in history that a non-professional team has managed to go this far. The first time this feat was achieved by IJsselmeervogels in 1975, and most recently in 2016, the result was repeated by the VVSB team.

SV Spakenburg will have a historic chance to become the first amateur club in history to reach the final. To do so, they would have to beat one of the three: Ajax Amsterdam, PSV or Feyenoord in the semi-finals (draw on March 4). According to the Serbian “Telegraf”, the sensation of this edition, in the event of promotion, will not agree to appear in the final match because of … religious beliefs.
The band, founded in 1931, has a very orthodox identity based on the biblical message. For this reason, they do not play matches on Sunday, and the final scheduled for April 30 falls on this day of the week.
Traditionally, the final match of the Dutch Cup is always played on a Sunday. However, there have been discussions recently in the Dutch association regarding the date of the match. It is said that if SV Spakenburg manages to reach the final, the match will be played on Saturday, April 29.

“If you believe in yourself and with God’s will, you can do anything,” coach Chris de Graaf said hoarsely on radio at Langs de Lijn En Omstreken just after reaching the semi-finals. “I used to start playing here as a five-year-old boy and now we’re all the way to the semi-finals of the Dutch Cup. It’s so beautiful. I look at all these people, it’s wonderful. Let’s win this cup,” added the coach.
After the match, the players organized a loud party in the locker room, and according to NOS.nl, one of them shouted: “I have already booked tickets for the Europa League”.
