Sylvia puts everyone on the mat

March 03, 2023 – Radio Brocken

Sylvia is the chairwoman of the judo club in Halle and has been practicing this sport for about 50 years – a really strong woman!

Who is Sylvia?

When Sylvia steps onto the judo mat every day, a black belt adorns her white “Gi”. This is what the well-known suits of martial artists are called. Theoretically, as a holder of the 6th Dan, a high master’s degree, she should even wear a white and red belt – an honor that is bestowed on particularly experienced masters and cannot be achieved through conventional examinations.
The seven-time world champion has been practicing the sport for half a century and currently trains children, young people and adults. She is also the chairwoman of the Judo Club Halle eV and manages the affairs of the association. She also coached Luisa Mahlzahn from 5th to 7th grade, who later became German Champion.

What fascinates Sylvia about judo?

At first, Sylvia secretly went to judo with her uncle before her parents gave her permission. The sport includes a lot of technique and you can really let off steam, which Sylvia likes about judo. Mutual respect is also very important – even if you literally put someone “on the mat”, both training partners should benefit and learn from it. The right fall school can also be useful in everyday life, for example in the event of a fall or in the event of necessary self-defence.

What makes a strong woman for Sylvia?

“Most people associate it with the sport and say, ‘Anyone who does judo as a woman is a strong woman’. I would agree, but there are not only strong women in sport, but in general. I wouldn’t reduce that to martial arts.”

What does Bianca want to tell young women?

Judo is a combat sport. You have to accept your partner, respect him. You learn with and for each other. And you get self-confidence – you know you can do something and if necessary you can use it.”
