Stefanos Tsitsipas complains about ATP rule at Masters tournaments: “Pretty bad”

As a punishment, the best Masters performance of the last year could then be deleted or points shouldn’t be added to it, according to the 24-year-old, who recently suffered from the consequences of a shoulder injury from the Australian Open.

Tsitsipas had to give up at the Mexican Open in February. At the Masters in Indian Wells, the number three in the world lost to Jordan Thompson in the first round (6:7 {0:7], 6:4, 6:7 [5:7]).

“I couldn’t get out, I had to play. In addition, you get punished and fined. It’s frustrating when you have something like that in addition to your injury and you also have to think about something like that,” criticized Tsitsipas now.

Tsitsipas demands adjustment of the ATP rule

“The ATP must definitely rethink these rules, sit down with the players and come up with something more logical,” demanded the top ten player. He doesn’t think “that they like it when players play injured”. In addition, the level of tennis would certainly increase, according to Tsitsipas.

According to ATP rules, athletes from the top 30 must play all Masters tournaments unless injured. If you miss a tournament without a valid reason, penalties are possible. Slightly less strict requirements apply to players who are older than 30 or have been playing on the ATP tour for at least twelve years. They don’t have to play all Masters tournaments.

For Tsitsipas, the event in Miami is now over. In the round of 16, 24-year-old Karen Khachanov lost 6:7 (4:7), 4:6.
