PGA: Rory McIlroy supports ball distance reduction

R&A (Royal and Ancient Golf Club) proposals to limit the distance golf balls travel when hit by elite players have received support from Rory McIlroy.

Several players, including Jon Rahm and Justin Thomas, have criticized the “Model Local Rule” (MLR) proposed last week by the rules of golf officials, the R&A and the USGA.

McIlroy’s support is a surprise in itself as he is one of the longest hitting golfers on the PGA Tour.

“For the elite player level, I like the idea,” said the PGA’s third-ranked player on the “No Laying Up” podcast.

“I know that’s an unpopular opinion with other golfers, but I believe we’re going to be able to identify who the best golfers really are,” he added.

The ‘MLR’ proposal, which could come into force by 2026, would give competition organizers the option of requiring players to only use balls tested under controlled conditions.

“Innovation is a part of every sport, it’s a part of every industry,” he concluded. But whenever that innovation goes beyond the footprint of the game, that’s where I think we have a problem. »
