NFL: Bryce Young too small and too light?

INDIANAPOLIS — University of Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Bryce Young, who is one of the best players available for the upcoming NFL Draft, told teams during his week of physical testing that concerns concerning its size are displaced.

On Saturday, Young officially posted a height of 5-foot-10-1/8 and a weight of 204 pounds, which would make him the lightest quarterback to be selected in the first round since at least 2006 and one of the smallest passers drafted since the merger between the AFL and NFL in 1967.

Young was 6 feet tall and weighed 194 pounds according to data from the University of Alabama.

“I’ve been this size all my life,” Young said. “I know who I am, I know what I can do. Everyone can speculate, ask me all the questions, I will continue to control what I can control, continue to work as best I can. […] I have confidence in myself, I know what I can do. »

Kyler Murray, who was drafted first overall by the Arizona Cardinals in 2019, was 5’10 1/8 tall, and weighed 207 pounds in NFL physical tests that year. Murray is the shortest quarterback to be selected in the first round since 1967, and he’s tied for lightest with Johnny Manziel, who was selected 22nd in 2014. They were the only two quarterbacks selected in the first round who were shorter 6 ft. Michael Vick, who was the Atlanta Falcons’ first draft pick in 2001, was 6ft tall and weighed 210lbs in that draft, while Drew Brees was 6ft tall and weighed 213lbs in the 2001 physical tests, before to be the San Diego Chargers’ first second-round pick.

Young’s size hasn’t impacted his career with one of the most powerful universities in American football, in what is considered the best conference in the country. Young won the Heisman Trophy and was named Southeastern Conference (SEC) Most Outstanding Offensive Player in 2021. He threw 79 touchdowns against 12 interceptions during his two seasons as the No. 1 quarterback for the Crimson Tide. In his last game – Alabama’s Sugar Bowl win over Kansas State last January – Young threw for 321 yards and five touchdowns.

Young said Friday he had already met formally with the Chicago Bears and Houston Texans during physical testing week. The Bears have the first draft pick, while the Texans have the second and twelfth picks.
