NBA: Raptors join Hawks in 8th place

The Toronto Raptors joined the eighth-place Atlanta Hawks in the East with a 114-104 victory over the Washington Wizards on Sunday.

That result, combined with the Hawks’ loss to the Memphis Grizzlies, leaves Toronto and Atlanta tied for eighth with identical records of 37-38. The Miami Heat lead them in seventh position with a record of 40 wins against 35 losses.

In Sunday’s game, Fred VanVleet became the eighth player in Raptors history to reach 6,000 points. He ended his evening with 28 points.

The Torontonians got off to a great start, building a 37-21 lead in the first quarter. The Wizards rebounded in the third quarter outscoring their rivals 38-24 in points, but the Canadian team held on in the fourth quarter.

OG Anunoby stood out in the game with 29 points and Pascal Siakam scored twice with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Jakob Poeltl recorded 12 points and 12 rebounds for his side.

Quebecer Chris Boucher had six points, but grabbed seven rebounds in the win.

At the Wizards, Kristaps Porzingis was the most productive of his team with 26 points.

Scottie Barnes (13 points) returned to action after a two-game absence, as did Precious Achiuwa.

They were bored at the wrist and the back of the thigh, respectively.

Gary Trent missed a third game in a row with a stiff right elbow.

The Raptors will face the Heat in their next game on Tuesday.
