For the German national team, national coach Flick and captain Kimmich were on the program this Friday. Dramaturgically, no better interlocutor could have been provided. But both took Bayern into consideration.
Dhe coaching earthquake at FC Bayern naturally also reached the national team in their preparation for the international test match against Peru on Saturday (8:45 p.m., in the WELT sports ticker). National coach Hansi Flick has nominated four from the Munich team for the games against Peru in Mainz and on Tuesday in Cologne against Belgium. One of them answered questions on Friday afternoon: German captain Joshua Kimmich sat with Flick on the DFB podium . So midfielder and Nagelsmann predecessor at Bayern.
Flick’s press spokeswoman prompted that “there is a topic in this room that has concerned a lot of people, that’s the news about FC Bayern”. She asked if Flick would like to say anything about it.
Flick answered only very briefly: “Of course we were very, very surprised by the headlines last night. But until now, Bayern Munich has not commented on it. Out of respect for Julian Nagelsmann and FC Bayern Munich, it’s just that I don’t want to say anything about it now.”
But he didn’t quite get away with that. He was asked if that wouldn’t interfere with the game’s processes. After all, there are also a few Bayern players in the squad who are sure to move it and such a message before a game like this is probably not in order. “It’s not going to inspire everyone,” said Flick, “so it’s my job to talk to the players. I’ll do that too, I’ve already done that. But now we have to wait and see what comes out of it in the end.”
Kimmich speaks of a “hot topic”
The same procedure was then staged with Kimmich. There had been a lot of headlines that had concerned many here, the DFB spokeswoman turned to Kimmich. She turned to Kimmich to see if the news had also concerned the games. He took a short artistic break, then said: “In general, of course, it’s absolutely understandable that it’s a hot topic now. On the other hand, there has been no confirmation from the club so far.” He asked for understanding that he could not say anything more about it.

But he was the one who worked hard at Bayern to get continuity in the coaching position. What a change of coach would do to him was asked. “I can only say that Julian Nagelsmann is an outstanding coach. I’ve had a lot of coaches, a lot of top coaches. And yet I’d say he’s easily in my top three best coaches. But I can’t say anything about the current state of affairs.”

Ultimately, that was no longer necessary. All public commitments to Nagelsmann were apparently irrelevant to the bosses after the 2-1 defeat in Leverkusen and the loss of the table lead to BVB last weekend. You ended the long-term project with the young coach (contract until 2026) after only 20 months. The coach is to be informed of the decision in a personal meeting this Friday.

The fact is that the dismissal for the German record champions will be expensive. According to BILD information, Nagelsmann earns an estimated eight to nine million euros a year. Means: Over the five-year term, he would have received up to 45 million euros in salary alone. As long as he does not have a new club, the club must continue to pay his salary. Or both sides agree on a settlement.
Nagelsmann’s successor is already ready: Former Dortmund coach Thomas Tuchel (49) will take over training at Bayern from Monday. The only thing missing is the signature under his contract. On April 1, the Champions League winner (2021 with Chelsea) will be on the sidelines for the first time in the top game against BVB.
